The Larynx

  • Anatomy: The voice box (larynx) is situated in the lower throat, connecting it to the top of the windpipe (trachea). Primary structures include the vocal cords and epiglottis (protective lid for the windpipe)
  • Functions: Major functions include voice production, prevention of aspiration (where liquids or foods may travel down the windpipe) and the cough reflex (to clear substances from the lungs or windpipe)
